PostHeaderIcon Leveraging Business Intelligence to Your Advantage in the Down Economy

Technologies, applications, and analytic practices utilised to aid an organisation in determination of its actual, past and future situations within the marketplace and in comparison to competition are collectively known as Business Intelligence (BI), which also commonly describes the data or findings of the analytics. BI can be strategically utilised to determine the departmental performance of a company (an internal glimpse), competitors of a company and their strategies, and when utilised properly, the acquired information enables the organisation to advance ahead of its competition.

The use of BI within any organisation (large or small) is critical at any time, particularly in a difficult climate. Business Intelligence should be heavily sought, acquired, and maintained in order to remain abreast of changes and challenges in the marketplace, for offerings applicability to the end user of the corporation’s product or service, to keep an eye on what the competitors have in development or in their pipeline, to determine the competitor’s key clients or customers, and to comprehend and remain vigilant in the pursuit and use of emerging technologies, uses, and markets. It should also be turned inward, to ensure effective performance and management within one’s own enterprise. Regardless of its employment, BI shouldn’t be used in determination of a quick fix for an organisation (although changes can be expedited due to BI implementation), but instead as a critical means toward direction of the future of the company for years to come.

The advantages of BI are clear: Unlike ever before, an organisation is able to infiltrate a marketplace, getting to know its competitors, clients, and potential clients – and even itself – with accuracy and a level of informative intensity that will only prove to become more in-depth and telescopic, in the future. Knowledge is power, and the power gained from such knowledge is exponentially more powerful than has been seen in business, to date. This information can be utilised in all aspects of business, from technological advancements, conceptualisation, design, innovation and manufacturing, to marketing, advertising, public relations, and sales.

While knowing what your competitors and internal departments are up to always seems delightfully advantageous, one must consider that the levels of potential use and penetration to the advantage of a corporation is directly equal to the level of your competitor’s penetration and insight into your company’s own operations and pathways for the future. The BI utilised by your company to your advantage every day is also being pursued, obtained, and utilised against you. So, celebrate your advantages obtained through BI, but do so warily and with a tighter hold upon all of your organisation’s own information.

Your organisation may not have formally implemented a policy of BI utilisation. However, you might be surprised to learn that you are already actively employing several means of researching, collecting, and presenting such analytics.

For example, a simple spreadsheet about your competitors’ revenue, expenditures, top level employees, and other such data is a very basic form of BI. Beyond spreadsheets, other accepted forms of BI are:

- Software that reports and queries (such as database software)

- OLAP (online analytical processing, such as provided by Microsoft, Oracle, Freereporting.com, OpenI, and RapidMiner)

- Digital Dashboards (presentation allowing monitoring of the contribution of various parts of an organisation)

- Data Mining (extraction of patterns from banks of data)

- Process Mining (analysis of processes based upon event logs)

- Business Performance Management (aids in business performance optimisation through a microscopic view into processes that drive results)

- Local Information Systems (LIS: tools which support geographic reporting)

While implementation of BI should be included within any growing business of the present and future, the entity should not become a puppet to its analytics and competitive knowledge. As in any form of business wherein marketing strategy meets technology, it will remain critical that a convergence of these two important facets of daily business is smooth and cooperative, versus one aspect becoming entirely relied upon to drive the other – and despite the propensity of these two realms of business to not work in the most natural of cohesion.

PostHeaderIcon Technologies That Make the Most of Solar Power

We have been used to flicking gadgets–like turning a dial or pushing a button–every time we want to make ourselves warm. Indeed technology has been part of our lifestyle and the ways of generating heat have increasingly provided us greater comfort in our homes, schools or businesses. Unfortunately, at a time when environmental concerns have grown serious and our need renewable resources has become urgent, not all heating technologies operate with cost-effective and environment-friendly materials. It is in this light that solar power becomes an ideal resource for generating heat.

Solar energy is easy to generate, cost-effective and renewable. All we need is a solar source–something that attracts rays of the sun into it and traps the heat generated by the process. That, basically, is how a sunroom works.

Sun rooms are constructed near homes or buildings. They make use of glass panels erected along the walls, from floor to ceiling, and usually facing the east to maximize heat absorption right at the moment the sun appears. The panels take in heat emitted by the sun, stores it and prevents it from being dissipated. Through vents and other devices, stored heat then gets distributed to where and when it is needed, such as living rooms or bedrooms during night time.

In more specific terms, the technologies that can help us tap solar power for heating even during winter include the following:

1) A Thermal Mass absorbs and stores solar energy during the day and distributes the heat at night.

2) The Trombe Wall applies heating and ventilation technologies. It combines the sunroom and thermal mass processes where air channels absorb heat between glass panels and a thermal mass. The wall stores heat from the sun, which eventually gets circulated throughout the wall via vents. The wall becomes the source of heat.

3) As with glass panels and thermal walls, a Transpired Collector works with walls that absorb solar power and heat the air as the latter enters and gets circulated through the ventilation system.

Moreover, it is refreshing to know that generated solar power does not only make us warm. It ventilates our buildings too. An example is what we call Solar Cooling. The process absorbs solar heat that fuels a steam engine which in turn runs cooling devices. Another example is called Solar Chimney. Inside the the chimney is a hollow thermal mass that heats the air and causes heat to evaporate. The process results in better air circulation and ventilation within the building.

There are many ways by which we can either heat or cool our homes, buildings or businesses. Unlike other heating systems that works through artificial means, heat, the technologies we briefly discussed above harness nature–heat from the sun–as source of power. They are cost-effective, ensuring excellent value-for-money investments. They also pose no threat to the environment. They respond to the need for ways of saving the heat when the sun is up so that our house will remain warm at night. In fact they do not only work for heating, they also work for cooling.

PostHeaderIcon Remote PC Access Software – Does it Work As Advertised?

I don’t know if this is a dream of yours, but being able to control any computer from anywhere in the world has pretty much always been a fantasy of sorts for me. (Yes, I have been called a geek from time to time.)

But seriously, it just doesn’t seem right that in the age of Blackberries and iPhones, “netbooks” and MacBook Airs, that people should be tied down to a cubicle or a desktop for any reason whatsoever, outside of perhaps a demanding and irrational slavedriver of a boss.

I know that some people — maybe more than some people — suffer from being forced to work under that kind of leader, but assuming you don’t, there really isn’t any reason why we shouldn’t be able to do our computing anywhere and at any time we choose. And this is exactly what remote PC access software is all about.

I have a very personal experience with this stuff, because it actually saved my bacon just a few years ago. If you haven’t heard this story before, let me just tell it to you quickly so you know where I’m coming from.

But first, just a note — I’m going to get to some resources where you can find out about the very best remote access software in just a second. So make sure you stay tuned. I promise you’ll know everything you need to in order to choose the package that’s right for you five minutes from now.

Now, back to the story. I’m lucky enough to be one of those people who gets to work from home. However, I’m not lucky enough to be one of those people who gets to work from home and live in a McMansion.

My home office is basically a spare bedroom that was doomed to disappear once my second child was born and it was converted into a nursery/office. (About 90% nursery and 10% office in reality.)

So what was going to happen was that I was going to lose access to my main computer for large periods of the day and night, meaning that I’d have to get my work done in between a newborn baby’s nap and sleep schedule.

If there are any parents out there, you know that this window of opportunity is pretty small to say the least. So what I needed, obviously, was a solution that would allow me to access that computer that I needed, but to do so without actually having to be in that room.

Sound familiar? Your situation may be similar to mine, or maybe you want to access your office PC from home, or your home PC from your office, or just any old PC from anywhere you happen to be. Whatever you’re going to use it for exactly, the way these things work remains the same.

You basically install a small client on the “host” computer, and then use a special piece of software and an Internet connection to literally control that host computer remotely. If you get the right software, it works like a charm.

I told you earlier that this kind of set up saved my bacon. And I was not kidding. This was a point in my life when I needed to put an enormous amount of time into work. If it hadn’t been for the remote access software that I used, I don’t know how it would’ve worked out.

In terms of choosing which package is right for you, the only resource I think you need to check out is this Remote PC Access Software review page, where you can watch a video demo of this software in action, and get video reviews of the top contenders and choose the one that’s right for you.

I would also go ahead and watch this remote PC access software video on YouTube for a bit more insight if you feel that you need it.

I hope all that helps!

PostHeaderIcon New Technology For Solar Panels Based on Diatom

Some engineers at Oregon State University have discovered a way to use an old way of life to create one of the most innovative production technologies for solar energy systems that can be surprisingly simple to build compared to existing solar cells based on silicon.

These small forms of marine unicellular life existed for at least 100 million years, and much of ocean life depends on them, directly or indirectly for their livelihoods. But in addition, diatoms have hard shells that can be used to create structures in a natural way to an extremely small scale, something with great potential for nanotechnology.

Biology rather than using conventional methods of production of semiconductors, researchers at Oregon State University and Portland State University have created a new form of solar cell type DSSC (dye-based), in which photons bounce as if on a machine to play Pinball (Flipper) or automatic pool, beating these pigments and producing electricity. The new technology developed can now be more expensive than some existing methods for manufacturing solar cells DSSC, but could lead to triple the electricity produced.

Most of the existing solar cell technology based on silicon and is reaching the limits of what can be done with it. “There is a great opportunity to develop different types of solar energy technology and is likely to eventually find a use several forms, depending on the situation,” says Greg rorro, professor of chemical engineering at Oregon State University.

The fundamental difference between the new method of manufacturing solar cells and the above procedures DSSC lies in the steps necessary to manufacture these devices, and the potential improvements it offers.

The new system is based on living diatoms, and especially in the shells of these unicellular algae. These shells have a kind of nano-structure that is suitable for the manufacture of solar cells DSSC. The first step is to let the algae are placed in a transparent surface conductive glass, and then withdrew the living organic material, leaving only small skeletons of diatoms to form a template.

Then using a biological agent to precipitate soluble titanium in very tiny nanoparticles of titanium dioxide, creating a thin film that acts the same way as did the semiconductor solar DSSC. The steps that would have been laborious and difficult to perform with conventional methods, are carried out very easily through these natural biological systems, using simple and inexpensive.
