PostHeaderIcon Hair Loss Breakthrough in the News

There may be some very good news for balding men and women who have been hoping for a “miracle cure for baldness”. New research has unveiled a discovery of a special protein which actually dictates the formation and growth of new hair follicles, specifically, in the human body.

In other words, the key to causing new hair growth and making baldness “extinct” may be closer than we think. It’s pretty exciting stuff, and it’s really part of a larger body of research that has demonstrated we may have more power over cellular growth and manipulation than we thought.

You see, our genes produce proteins that go and “communicate” to our body as to where certain bodily attributes will grow, or originate, such as hair follicles. Scientists have identified one of the three proteins that tells the body to produce more hair follicles, making the manipulation of hair growth much closer than it ever was before, scientifically and realistically speaking.

Unfortunately, we all know how long new technology usually takes to actually morph into something that can be used by the general public.

This new technology, while promising, has not been manipulated in such a way that it can be used by people yet. It’s only been tested on mice so far, and has proven successful in creating “furrier” mice.

We don’t know how long it will be before this new technology makes it to market for human use, or if it is even safe for long term use, consumption, or topical application, whichever the method may be.

It will need to go through a lot more testing, as well as be approved for public human use by the FDA, the Food and Drug Administration, before it can be sold as either an over the counter hair loss and balding medication or treatment, or even a prescription treatment or medication for balding men and women.

Right now, we are still seeing a lot of natural hair loss remedies that can help you regrow your hair, mostly through nutritional additions to your diet that may be lacking, and can cause or contribute to hair loss in men and women.

There are also popular over the counter hair loss treatments with an ingredient called Rogaine, which is supposed to help promote the growth of healthy new hair and help repair damaged or unproductive hair follicles.

Until this new technology comes to fruition, those are our options, and some of them work very well on the people who try them!

PostHeaderIcon Solar Technology – Softening Semiconductor Demand Boon to Solar Power?

Worldwide demand for semiconductors has been dropping over the past several years, and experts predict that 2010 will see a continuation of that trend. That’s the bad news. The good news is that many chip making companies are beginning to think green and shift their focus to solar power.

Green Boom

Some pundits are even predicting a solar boom for 2010 and beyond, fueled by a combination of rising oil prices, falling semiconductor demand, and a nearly unlimited potential for solar power. In order to cash in on the coming boom, several semiconductor companies have undertaken major strategy overhauls. They have good reason to be optimistic, since they have a history of creating cost-effective processes for slicing and shaping silicon, which is the key ingredient in standard solar modules.

Solar Technology

Even venerable chip maker Intel has hopped on the bandwagon, spinning off a solar tech company called SpectraWatt in 2008. The new company will not only manufacture and supply photovoltaic cells to the solar market, but using Intel’s considerable capacity for innovation, SpectraWatt also has been charged with improving the manufacturing process, which will ultimately reduce the cost of photovoltaic energy.

Not to be outdone, within days of the Intel announcement, industry giant IBM announced that it was partnering with Japanese semiconductor equipment maker Tokyo Ohka Kogyo to begin making thin film solar cells from a combination of copper, indium, gallium, and selenide. Although neither company will manufacture the cells themselves, the plan is to combine their considerable intellectual might to develop new green technology to license to other companies within the next two years. That means the technology should begin hitting the solar market in mid-2010.

The good news for consumers amid all the frenzy to cash in on the burgeoning solar market is that the cost of sun power should begin decreasing significantly. The not-so-good news is that as the price per solar watt continues to go down, so do the potential profits for smaller companies that may not be able to compete with such giants as Intel or IBM.

As the situation currently stands, America is far from being a world leader in solar technology. In fact, the U.S. has been lagging behind many countries, including the likes of Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Portugal, and even Greece. However, if the current trend continues, it’s entirely possible that the United States will assume a much more prominent position in the solar technology industry over the next few years.

PostHeaderIcon Advanced Technology Predicted in the Bible

Millions of people in this world do not believe God exists and claim that he is only imaginary. Additionally, these same people reason that since God does not exist then the bible is also fake and not from God. These beliefs are on a rising trend worldwide. However, what is the truth? Is God imaginary and the Bible fake or is God real and the Bible actually “God’s Word” being inspired by him? Please take a moment and completely read some of the facts that are often overlooked.

The Bible predicted television and other advanced technology. Revelation 11:3 describes two witnesses which will prophesy in the last days. Revelation 11:7-10 is where it gets interesting. There it says that these two witnesses will be killed and their dead bodies will lay in the street and “they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves. And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another” How can it be that people of all languages and nations all over Earth can all see two dead people lying in a street? The answer is because the Bible was actually predicting the Television and similar other technology such as computers. Television, computers and other electronic devices in addition to 24-hour global news coverage would allow for such an event to be seen by everyone around the world.

The bible predicted other technology as well. In Mark 13:10 and also Matthew 24:14 they state a prophecy about the Gospel being published and preached to the entire world before the end comes. These scriptures were written way before the printing press was even invented. Before the printing press, Bibles were handwritten and were much rarer to obtain. These scriptures predict more than just a printing press however. These scriptures predict that the Gospel will spread throughout the entire world. The very means for transporting the Gospel would be extremely difficult without the means of international transportation such as aircraft travel. Even considering the automated production of Bibles accomplished after the invention of the printing press and also the advanced means of transportation, this would still be a very difficult task to accomplish without the use of technology such as radio, television, satellites, internet and other technology.

The bible seems to have predicted the invention of the nuclear bomb. In Isaiah 17:1 it prophesied that the city of Damascus will be taken away from being a city and would become a ruinous heap. Damascus is perhaps the worlds oldest city. This prophecy has not yet been fulfilled since this city still exists to this very day. However, in our generation, only a nuclear bomb would be the weapon that could cause this entire city to become a ruinous heap. In Matthew 24:21-22 it prophesied that there will be great tribulation that has never happened to the world and will never happen again. It then states that should those days not be shortened that nobody would be saved. A nuclear war would indeed be considered the greatest tribulation in all mankind’s history. And only a nuclear war would cause the need for God to intervene in order to prevent all mankind from becoming extinct. Another supporting scripture is found at Revelation 11:18 which describes God’s wrath against those who ruined the Earth. There are in fact many scriptures in the Bible that seem to support the invention of the nuclear bomb. However, for the sake of time, only these three scriptures have been stated.

Anyone who would have prophesied these words even just a few hundred years ago surely would have sounded “crazy” by the world’s standards. However, in our day and age, it is not hard to see how these predictions are very possible. The bible is filled with prophecies that have already come true and others that are yet to be fulfilled. These prophecies prove that the Bible is “God’s Word” and has been inspired by him. Therefore, if the Bible is real then that means God is real! If you already have not, please get to know God. Repent of your sins, ask for forgiveness and live the life you were supposed to live. Help spread this message to all who will listen.

PostHeaderIcon Technology Partnerships Boost Nascent Wind Power Industry

By working with local universities and overseas component suppliers, manufacturers aim to produce more affordable turbines that are 15 to 20 percent more efficient in generating electricity.

The wind power industry in China is blowing up a storm.

From just six wind turbine manufacturers in 2004, the China Wind Power Association estimates the country is now home to more than 70 companies. This represents at least 17 times growth in just six years.

Output is multiplying swiftly as well. Statistics from China Wind Power Material Equipment Network show 124 percent year-on-year growth in 2009 production to 10,129 wind turbines generating a total of 13,803.2MW.

This, in turn, is promoting development in the auxiliary industries such as blades, converters, pitch control systems and inverters.

To make a mark in the export sector, China’s wind turbine manufacturers are now investing in technology, certification and aftersales service upgrades. The majority of companies only started catering to overseas markets during the past two or three years. In 2009, only four suppliers shipped out wind turbines internationally. These are Sinovel, Goldwind, Shanghai Electric and Changzhou New United. Sinovel exported 10 units to India. Goldwind sent three wind turbines to the US, while Shanghai Electric shipped two to Thailand. Changzhou New United manufactured one each for Thailand and the US.

At present, most locally made wind turbines cannot handle speeds that are too slow or too fast. The Chinese Wind Energy Association said a 1.5MW generator typically requires wind speed of at least 3 meters per second to start and 12.5 meters per second to generate electricity. But at 25 meters per second, the turbines need to stop working because the electricity generated would be too much for the transformers to handle.

Because of this limitation, suppliers focusing on large-capacity wind turbines are working with local universities in developing new technologies that can help improve stability and performance. The Shandong Changxing Group is cooperating with the Shaanxi University of Science and Technology to produce high-speed synchronous generators with a brushless excitation system. Unlike the traditionally incorporated doubly-fed asynchronous generators and permanent magnet direct-drive systems, the newer technology can convert electricity even in extreme wind conditions. Shandong Changxing is said to be the first in China to use such advanced systems, which can generate 15 to 20 percent more electricity than wind turbines adopting other technologies.

New United Group Co. Ltd works not only with the Shenyang Industrial University to develop 1.5MV wind turbines, but also with Germany’s Euros, UK’s GH and France’s Alstom to produce key components such as blades, controllers and converters. Using information shared from this technology partnership, the company initiates another round of R&D to develop parts in-house.

Some component suppliers, on the other hand, were set up by technology institutes themselves. Beijing Corona Science & Technology Co. Ltd was set up by the Chinese Academy of Science’s Institute of Electrical Engineering. With the institute’s focus on high-tech R&D, Beijing Corona is able to offer converters, pitch control systems and inverters for both wind and solar-powered products.

Wind turbines made more affordable

Advancements in technology coupled with China’s relatively low labor costs are pushing down prices of wind turbines. Guangzhou Hongying Energy Co. Ltd, which exports kW-rated capacity wind turbines to North America, said small China-made units are 100 to 200 percent less expensive than overseas variants, while larger models are priced 20 percent lower.

From about 6 million yuan ($885,000) per megawatt at the start of 2009, quotes fell to below 5 million yuan ($737,000) in H1 2010. Global prices are falling, but not fast enough to meet China’s low rates. From a high of 1.22 million euros ($1.6 million) per megawatt in 2009, prices are projected to fall to about 1.04 million euros ($1.4 million) by 2011.

The swift decline in quotes for China-made wind turbines is attributed in part to the way some small manufacturers offer really low prices, often at the expense of quality.

But larger, more research-oriented companies are less inclined to reduce quotes to finalize a transaction. Among these is Shandong Changxing, which believes engaging in price competition at such an early stage is not a move in the right direction.

Other improvements

Apart from investing in technology, companies such as New United are bringing in professional testing equipment to ensure the quality of its turbines. The company now has blade, 3MW land drag and 3.8MW land grid-connection testing platforms in addition to an EMC laboratory.

Apart from these, New United carries out various tests on turbine performance under different weather conditions, including low temperatures and high air salinity. The units are subjected to a shipping simulation assessment to evaluate how well the sealed film packaging holds up against sea travel. Burn-in tests are carried out as well.

Likewise, Shandong Changxing carries out land inspection to check resistance to moisture and corrosion, and evaluate suitability for sea and land use.

By improving the technology, manufacturers also aim to speed up turnaround in acquiring export certification such as being able to carry the CE mark or be UL-listed. Since the industry is still in its nascent stage, certification is usually per component and not for the entire turbine. Depending on the part and type of turbine, the process can take three to more than five months.

The lengthy turnaround sometimes causes problems in meeting delivery schedules. Companies would often have to negotiate lead times with buyers. In fact, a few manufacturers said they are unable to ship out some of the orders placed last year because the export certification is still not ready.

Presently, China-made wind turbines are exported to the US, the EU and Southeast Asia.

Aftersales service is being enhanced as well. Apart from sending engineers to guide buyers during on-site installations, suppliers are providing bilingual technical blueprints with metric and imperial measurements, and operating and maintenance manuals.

PostHeaderIcon New Solar Power Technology May Replace the Voltaic Solar Panel

A research team at MIT has developed solar power technology that may make the photo-voltaic panels that are so popular today obsolete. The temperature of the heat that it produces is so intense that it can burn through wood or cut through steel like butter.

Today, if you take a look at homes that are powered by solar energy, you are most likely to see photo-voltaic panels atop the roof of the buildings. For over forty years, this has been the primary way in which most people view solar energy. The photo-voltaic panels collect energy from the sun, convert it into electrical energy, and store it in battery cells somewhere within the home.

But the days of the photo-voltaic cells being the dominant form of solar energy may be coming to an end. Particularly if the researchers at MIT have anything to say about it.

The device causing so much excitement is something called a parabolic collector. A solar collector is a means of focusing the rays of the sun onto a particular spot and collecting the energy generated. A parabolic solar collector is an array of mirrors that take the rays from the sun and focus them on a singular point. In the design that the researchers of MIT have worked on, this singular point is a pipe that contains a special liquid whose function is to collect and contain the energy generated by the parabolic collector. The stored energy is later extracted in the form of electricity via a turbine generator.

The idea of parabolic collectors itself is not new. What usually happens is that the water or liquid in the heated pipes turn to steam because of the applied heat. The steam, in turn, drives the turbines which create the electricity.

What is new in the MIT scenario is the actual design of the parabolic collector. The key component in this new design is a twelve foot dish or mirror with the amazing ability to focus the energy from the sun to such an intense level that it is hundreds of times more powerful than normal sunlight. So hot, in fact, that a piece of paper placed in the path of the focused beam will instantly burst into flame. So intense, that water placed in its path is instantly converted into steam. In other words, energy from the sun can be harvested at a rate 30, 40, or more times the rate that it can currently be collected via photo-voltaic methodology.

The immediate practical application of this is that the payback time for someone investing in solar energy will decrease significantly. Normally, when a homeowner invests in solar energy technology, the payback time is somewhere between seven to ten years. With this new technology, however, the payback time can be as little as three, and maybe even two years.
